Throughout history, society has been shaped by many people; both high and low profile figures alike. Whether through influencing government legislation or improving social housing, our history is dense with examples of Christian reformers who have made significant changes to public life, shining a light into the dark areas of society.
In this video we look at C S Lewis’ incredible literature that has revolutionised the way thousands of people view Christianity. Throughout his life, Lewis strived to bring truth to the masses, and his abundant works have proven to be an invaluable resource for those seeking to understand faith. To this day his legacy lives on, through the arts, film and famous collection of books.
Next, we look at Lord Shaftesbury’s work for the poor and working class. Shaftesbury began hundreds of community projects, some of which are still around today. He helped factory workers, improved public health, defended the cause of the chimney sweep boys and introduced Ragged Schools, providing education for poor children. His work with the poor and needy transformed their lives and has greatly improved the well-being of many thereafter.
Perhaps one of the lesser-known Christian reformers is Octavia Hill. She fought for the preservation of clean and open spaces. Her transformation of working class housing ensured for many the chance to obtain comfortable accommodation, and her work in preserving green spaces secured for public enjoyment many areas of countryside across the UK.
Finally, we take a look at the life of William Wilberforce and his groundbreaking work, which helped to abolish slavery in the UK. Wilberforce saw success in parliament only three days before his death after eleven defeated bills and 46 years of campaigning. Upon hearing the news, he is reported to have said to his friend and colleague: “Well Henry, what shall we abolish next?”
