Collaborate

Collaborate |kəˈlabəˌrāt| verb [intrans.] - work jointly on an activity, esp. to produce or create something.

Box-Head were commissioned to create a piece for the Everything Conference 2011 which would celebrate the act of collaboration. Taking the concept quite literally, we invited friends and family to join us in creating a giant painting by numbers piece. Our team have fond memories of painting by numbers as children, so in creating a huge canvas to work on, we were excited to share the same fun collectively as adults.

The inspiration for the content of the piece was the following passage from 1 Corinthians 12:

‘Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. ... God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.’

Again, our interpretation of this text was quite literal, with different body parts forming the main visual theme of the piece. Legs, arms, mouths and ears all joining together to form a colourful display of unity.

We constructed the timber canvas over the course of a week, and filming took place on Saturday 5th March at the historic Temple Works site in Holbeck, Leeds. Painting the piece took 5 hours to complete, the whole process of which can be seen in the final section of the video. We recruited a team of 20 volunteers to help us in this, generously giving up their day in exchange for little more than the promise of food, drink and a lot of fun. The atmosphere on the filming day was key, and massively exceeded our hopes for what it would become. Few of the people involved in the shoot knew each other prior to that day, but everyone got on like a big family. With a shared project to work on, conversations sprung up naturally, and there was a very genial feeling amongst all involved.

Music was kindly provided by the talented (and startlingly attractive) folks at Wave Media Productions, who also came down to get involved in the painting of the piece itself.

Enjoy
