The Angel of Newgate Prison

Who has taken a close look at a £5 banknote recently? If so, you will already have come face to face with our muse for this article. Since her debut in 2002, Elizabeth Fry has appeared on the reverse side of the English £5 banknotes. She is only the second woman to have been given the accolade of this position, following in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale. When the Bank of England published its decision the BBC asked ‘the five pound question: Who is Elizabeth Fry, and is she a slightly obscure choice for this rare honour?’ Could she really be seen as holding a candle to the Lady of the lamp? As a ‘creative’, how do I fit in?
Matt Hatch
Friday 30 Jul 2010
It’s our experience that many ‘creatives’, which includes artists, designs, performers, musicians, writers, photographers, & many many more, often feel fairly frustrated in their local church setting. So it might be that you feel misunderstood about your potential; it may be due to a lack of opportunities to express your gift in the local church; or just a lack of creativity within the church culture.
Are you in the arena?

St Francis of Assisi is credited with famously saying—“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words” and also “It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching”.
I am sure that we all know that the word “Gospel” itself simply means “good news” but that doesn’t take us very much further. Do we equate “gospel” with the simple message of sin, the cross, repentance and faith, or is it much wider—being good news as well as speaking good news?
Crashing about
Nick Chatrath
Monday 19 Jul 2010
Referring to religion, the philosopher A C Grayling wrote “the elephant is crashing about in the room, trampling people to death, and politely ignoring it is not an option”.
Does Christian belief automatically relegate you to an intellectual slum, to use Dallas Willard’s phrase? As Christians are we foraging around in rubbish dumps of knowledge for anything vaguely edifying, but actually being shown up for the intellectually malnourished people that we are, miles away from a rich life of the mind?
Salt and Light
David Stroud

One summer evening, as I walked home, looking forward to spending supper time with the family, the idyllic scene played out in my mind. We would sit outside in the back yard, enjoying a dinner of roasted chicken with garlic, lemon and herbs. Perhaps some new potatoes, a green salad, a glass of wine…
Pie Jesu Requiem
Matthew Hosier
Wednesday 14 Jul 2010
Christina Johnson filled Westminster Chapel with her voice, performing a cappella the classical song “Pie Jesu”.
This well known classical piece was chosen by Christina as example of how Art can fill a space and captivate our attention, rather than for the theological content of the lyrics.

Everything belongs to God – even the place that you work!
Duncan Hanton
Monday 12 Jul 2010
Like two train tracks running side by side, many people feel they have two parallel lives that run alongside each other, with a work life shaped by targets, teams and timekeeping and a personal life shaped by faith and friendship. If everything belongs to the Lord, how do we live more honestly and take down the down the barriers between our public and private lives?

Isner and Mahut – Culture Makers?
Liam Thatcher
Friday 25 Jun 2010
I’m not a big fan of tennis – I’ll watch a Wimbledon final, and the odd game here and there if I get a few moments. But I have to say, I was fascinated by the Isner vs Mahut match of the last three days. Not because of the quality of tennis on display (towards the end it looked a little ragged – understandably! – Though I would still not fancy my chances against them!) but because of the challenge it posed for the Wimbledon staff, commentators – the whole structure of the tournament!
